Vorab erstmal vielen Dank, dass du individuelle Fragen stellst, die sich tatsächlich auf uns und das Album beziehen! Die Antworten kommen alle von Sascha, dem Sänger der Band.
Ich vermute mal, dass die vier Jahre Pause zum neuen Album vordringlich daran lagen, dass der liebe Arkadius viel mit anderen Projekten eingespannt war – oder habt ihr euch bewusst ein kreatives Break genommen?
Stimmt schon, das war einer der Gründe. Familien, Jobs, usw. Arkadius und ich haben aber in der Zwischenzeit auch zusammen an diversen Projekten gearbeitet: SuidAkrA, Dragonbreed und Call Of Fartage z.B.
Wie seid ihr an die Platte herangegangen und wie war die Arbeit am Album selbst? Bei allen vorhandenen Nuancen und dem Abwechslungsreichtum macht die Scheibe den Eindruck, als sei sie recht locker-flockig von der Hand gegangen, täuscht das?
Die Zusammenarbeit war super inspirierend, wie immer eigentlich, das ist so ein wechselseitiges Geben und Nehmen. Arkadius nimmt ein paar Riffs auf, ich sing’ was drüber, wenn’s passt gehen wir gemeinsam an die Struktur und Feinheiten. Wir haben das diesmal komplett remote an unterschiedlichen Standorten und in engem Austausch gemacht und sind immer noch begeistert davon, wie gut das heutzutage klappen kann. Zum Mix haben wir “in Echtzeit” Videokonferenzen ohne spürbare Latenzen beim gemeinsamen Hören gemacht. Das war eine Riesenerfahrung aber zugleich aktuell für uns auch die einzige Möglichkeit.
“Locker-flockig” klingt wie “hingerotzt” lol, nein, wenn wir im Flow sind, geht das schon mal recht schnell mit neuen Ideen. Wir haben uns aber viel Zeit für Sound, Texte und Details genommen, um auch unserem eigenen Anspruch gerecht zu werden. Dinge kritisch betrachtet, verworfen und neu angefangen, um das Bestmögliche rauszuholen. Das gehört dazu.
Habt ihr auf irgend etwas, eventuell im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Platten, besonderes Augenmerk gelegt? #
Nicht so, dass es vorab geplant war, aber wo du den Abwechslungsreichtum ansprichst. Wir finden, im Vergleich zu den vorherigen Alben ist DRAWN INTO MADNESS nochmal reifer und runder, was den FOC-Sound und -Charakter angeht. Nicht mehr ganz so experimentell, aber schon noch mit der Freiheit, die wir uns nehmen wollen und brauchen, was z.B. Genres angeht. Wir versuchen halt nicht zu kopieren oder imitieren, was grad im Trend ist, sondern das zu verkörpern, was wir fühlen. Da sind die Einflüsse sehr breitgefächert.
Der Titel lässt ja einiges an Spielraum – wer treibt bzw zieht hier wen in den Wahnsinn?
Einige Textstellen beziehen sich auf Shakespeares Hamlet, so auch der Titel des Albums. “Drawn” ist außerdem ein Wortspiel wegen des Artworks, mit dem wir auch mega happy sind. Kirsten Schüßler, eine langjährige enge Freundin und Fan der Band, hat dutzende von Original-Hintergründen extra für dieses Album auf Leinwänden gemalt. Sie hat auch die ganze Zeit den Entstehungsprozess der Songs und Texte begleitet. Auch hier eine echte gegenseitige Bereicherung auf unterschiedlichen kreativen Ebenen, für die wir sehr dankbar sind.
Bei den Songtiteln gilt ähnliches, auch hier könnte alles mögliche dahinterstecken und alles irgendwie mit „Wahnsinn“ zusammenhängen – kann man von einem konzeptuellen oder zumindest metathematisch zusammenpassenden Ansatz sprechen?
Nun, meine Songtexte haben meist persönliche Hintergründe. Erfahrungen, die ich versuche in Bilder und Worte zu verpacken, die gleichzeitig Ventil sind, aber auch genügend Raum für eigene Interpretationen lassen, für die, die zuhören oder lesen. Das sind durchaus auch Themen, die einen in die Nähe des Wahnsinns treiben, ja. Wut, Enttäuschung, Verluste, Sehnsüchte, Krieg. Die Musik hat hier therapeutische, verarbeitende Bedeutung für mich, immer schon. Es ist allerdings kein durchgehendes, einzelnes Thema oder Konzept über das ganze Album hinweg. Ich würde dennoch sagen, dass der Titel die Klammer um die Songs und deren Bedeutung bildet, mitsamt der hier und da verstreuten Anlehnungen an Hamlet o.ä.
Bleibt noch zu klären wie es künftig mit FoC weitergeht, habt ihr wiedermal vor live zu spielen?
Aktuell sind keine Live-Gigs geplant, aber wer weiß. Wir sind jedenfalls so geflasht, dass wir schon mehrmals darüber gesprochen haben so schnell wie möglich an neuem Material zu arbeiten. Ich denke, das wird spätestens nächstes Jahr passieren.

First of all, thanks for asking individual questions that actually relate to us and the album! The answers all come from Sascha, the singer of the band.
I guess that the four years break for the new album was mainly due to the fact that dear Arkadius was busy with other projects - or did you consciously take a creative break?
True, that was one of the reasons. Families, jobs, etc. But in the meantime Arkadius and I also worked together on several projects: SuidAkrA, Dragonbreed and Call Of Fartage for example.
How did you approach the record and how was the work on the album itself? With all the nuances and variety present, the record gives the impression of being pretty loosey-goosey, is that deceptive?
The collaboration was super inspiring, as always actually, it's such a two-way give and take. Arkadius records a few riffs, I sing over them, if it fits we go together to the structure and subtleties. This time we did it completely remotely at different locations and in close exchange and we're still amazed at how well that can work nowadays. For the mix, we did "real-time" video conferencing with no noticeable latency when listening together. That was a huge experience but at the same time the only possibility for us at the moment.
"loosey-goosey" sounds like spit-out lol, no, when we are in the flow, it goes quite fast with new ideas. But we took a lot of time for sound, lyrics and details to meet our own standards. We looked at things critically, discarded them and started again to get the best out of them. That's part of it.
Did you pay special attention to anything, maybe compared to the previous records?
Not that it was planned in advance, but where you mention the variety. We think, compared to the previous albums, DRAWN INTO MADNESS is again more mature and rounded in terms of FOC sound and character. Not so experimental anymore, but still with the freedom we want and need, for example concerning genres. We don't try to copy or imitate what's trendy at the moment, but to embody what we feel. There are very broad influences.
The title leaves some room for maneuver - who drives or pulls whom into madness?
Some text passages refer to Shakespeare's Hamlet, so also the title of the album. "Drawn" is also a pun because of the artwork, which we're also mega happy with. Kirsten Schüßler, a longtime close friend and fan of the band, painted dozens of original backgrounds on canvases especially for this album. She also accompanied the whole time the creation process of the songs and lyrics. Again, a real mutual enrichment on different creative levels, for which we are very grateful.
With the song titles the same applies, also here anything could be behind it and everything is somehow related to "madness" - can you speak of a conceptual or at least metathematically matching approach?
Well, my song lyrics mostly have personal backgrounds. Experiences that I try to pack into images and words that are at the same time an outlet, but also leave enough room for own interpretations for those who listen or read. These are definitely also topics that drive one close to madness, yes. Anger, disappointment, losses, longings, war. The music here has therapeutic, processing significance for me, always has. It's not a consistent, single theme or concept throughout the album, though. I would still say that the title is the bracket around the songs and their meaning, along with the here and there scattered references to Hamlet or the like.
It remains to be clarified how it will go on with FoC in the future, do you plan to play live again?
Currently there are no live gigs planned, but who knows. We are so flashed that we have already talked about working on new material as soon as possible. I think that will happen next year at the latest.
